How to Use Lead Magnets to Grow Your Email List

Using freebies (aka “lead magnets”) is only one of the many ways that you can add people to your list. This one just happens to be my favorite way for the simple fact that it allows us to lead with value and generosity before ever asking someone to do business with us. Lead magnets also -

  • Allow you to share your philosophy/ways of doing things with potential clients so they can get a sense of who you are

  • Establish your sense of credibility if the content resonates with the user

  • Spark wonder for potential clients (“If they gave all of this away for free, what would it be like to work with them?”)

Step 1: Create your freebie.

There are SO many options that you can use for lead magnets and the best one to pick is the one that you feel most comfortable doing:

  • If you feel comfortable on camera, maybe a training video series could work great for you.

  • If you have a product/app-based service, you can try offering a free trial.

  • If you love to engage directly with a live audience, hosting a webinar or a workshop could be a ton of fun.

  • If you work best putting your thoughts on paper, crafting a beautiful eBook would be awesome.

Step 2: Create a landing page.

The next obvious question is, “How do people get the gem of a knowledge bomb I just created?” A landing page dedicated to promoting your offer is the key. We don’t have an in-house resource created on this (yet!) so after searching the internet, here are two options you can check out to learn more about creating your landing page.

  • This one is from Unbounce, it’s super simple and straightforward and you don’t have to leave your email address to read

  • This one is from HubSpot, it’s longer form, Chapter 3: The Anatomy of a Great Landing Page is solid. You will need to leave your email address and business name, but I think it’s worth it.

Step 3: Share your landing page.

This is where you’re going to have to get creative and think about where your ideal audience lives. If you have the budget, you can create targeted ads on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Google to drive traffic to your page. Alternatively, you can share social media posts on your platforms to drive traffic too. If you are a member of online communities (Facebook Groups) that allow you to share your freebie, that’s a great place, too.
